Born Lincoln, Nebraska; admitted to bar 1988, Nevada; 1989, U.S. District Court, District of Nevada; 1997, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Education: University of Nevada-Las Vegas (M.A., with honors, 1982); University of the Pacific, McGeorge College of Law (J.D., 1987). 

Member:  State Bar of Nevada; Washoe County Bar Association.

Mr. Smith began his career as a law clerk for the Honorable Joseph O. McDaniel (Fourth Judicial District Court), then as an Assistant District Attorney in Elko, Nevada, later serving as the elected DA, from 1990 to 1994.  He served as the Chief Criminal City Attorney for the City of Reno during 1995 before joining the Office of the Nevada Attorney General where he served from 1995 through 1996.  Prior to joining Laxalt & Nomura in 2011, Mr. Smith practiced civil litigation with the statewide firm of Perry & Spann between 1996 and 2008, and later in partnership with his brother at the Smith Law Firm in Reno.  Mr. Smith’s areas of practice include insurance defense and business litigation.
